The archipelago consists of 7 main islands (also called the seven sisters):

  • La Maddalena;
  • Caprera that hosted Garbaldi during his exile;
  • Santo Stefano, which housed the NATO military and submarine base;
  • Spargi (and Spargiotto) with its sheer fortifications and its famous Cala Corsara and Cala Granara;
  • Budelli where the famous Rosa beach is located. If you’re wondering “Why the famous beach in Budelli is Pink,” know that the color of the sand is due to the presence of pink skeletons of bryozoans and foraminifera;
  • Santa Maria, which owes its name to a very old convent with a medieval history. Port Madonna Lagoon and the Asinelli Pass a connect it to
  • Razzoli overlooking the Straits of Bonifacio, very close to Corsica;
  • And lots of smaller islets and reefs.
