The Archipelago is made up of seven main islands (also called the seven sisters):

  • Caprera, which hosted Garibaldi in exile;
  • Santo Stefano, which hosted a military base for NATO and for submarines;
  • Spargi (and Spargiotto) with its fortifications overlooking the sea and its famous Cala Corsara and Cala Granara;
  • Budelli – the location of the famous Rosa beach (if you are asking yourself why the famous beach at Budelli is called “Rosa,” it is because the presence of bryozoan skeletons and pink foraminifera has turned the sand a rosy colour);
  • Santa Maria, which owes its name to a medieval convent: La Laguna di Porto Madonna and Passo degli Asinelli connect it to
  • Razzoli, which faces the Bocche di Bonifacio, very close to Corsica;
  • and many little islets and rocks.
